Poetry Aloud
Poetry Aloud is an annual poetry speaking competition open to all second level students in Ireland both North and South of the border. It is organised by Poetry Ireland and The National Library of Ireland in partnership with University College Cork. It receives almost 2000 entries every year. Marino College is a well-known school in this prestigious competition as a result of its continuing success year on year.
Last year Marino College was so proud of Michael Tient whom won 1st place in the senior category winning €300 for himself as well as book tokens to the value of €200 for our school library. Following on from his success Michael was asked to perform one of his winning poems Quarantine by Eavan Boland in the “Transatlantic Tribute to Eavan Boland” at the end of May, 2020.
He was included in a stellar line-up of contributors such as Mary Robinson and Chelsea Clinton. The current Director of The Arts Council, Maureen Kennelly, (former Director of Poetry Ireland) described Michael’s performance as one of the “highlights” of her year.
